WASHINGTON, D.C. — Suzette Martinez Standring, 2004-06 president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, shot brief videos of two top speakers at its 38th annual conference June 26-29, 2014.
The first is 1:32 of NSNC member John Avlon, editor in chief of The Daily Beast. He spoke on “How to Succeed as a Columnist in a Social Media World.”
Suzette filmed two segments of the acceptance speech of The Washington Post’s Gene Weingarten. On June 28 at a banquet hosted by Howard University, the humorist, editor and Pulitzer-winning journalist received NSNC’s 2014 Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award.
First, he thanked Gina Barreca for her introduction, explaining how he met the feminist studies/English professor and columnist, after they collaborated on the book I’m with Stupid: One Man. One Woman. 10,000 Years of Misunderstanding Between the Sexes Cleared Right Up. Part of that is in this 1:50 video.
In this 2:12 segment, Gene tries to peer through NSNC’s selection process.
Gene and Gina collaborated on the book I’m with Stupid. They wrote it via phone and email, meeting at the beginning of their promotion tour — first stop, the CBS Morning News just before Valentine’s Day on Feb. 9, 2004. Click on the photo for the story and the 5:27 interview.
