George Will Presented With the Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award
Legendary conservative columnist George Will received the 2020 Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists during an online ceremony December 3. Mr. Will’s acceptance speech touched on the importance of being honored with an award bearing the memory and legacy of World War II journalist Ernie Pyle.
A Q&A followed, led by Tony Norman, NSNC president and longtime journalist with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The hour was rich with intelligent discourse, as Mr. Will shared his passions of writing and baseball complete with personal stories. It was a highly quotable night. Mr. Will’s long career includes being one of the most widely syndicated columnists, and a history as a TV commentator, journalist, author, and baseball fanatic. He writes for his own audience, those who are educated, who love an informed, intelligent opinion based on deep research and facts. He shared that he often reads 10,000 pages of research just to write a 750-word column. He cares not for the critics and never reads hate mail or social media posts. For writers, the hour was rich with practical and inspiring advice.
Every year the NSNC awards the Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award to a columnist whose body of work exemplifies the outstanding work and character that the writing of Ernie Pyle embodied.
