There’s no question social media can be confusing. Just when you figure out one platform, it changes, or another emerges. Should I be on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat? The landscape is littered with the bodies of dead social media platforms. Watch out. You just stepped in a pile of MySpace!
But the reality for writers is this: The number-one person you can count on to spread the word about your brilliant work is you. Using social media to increase your readership works. But it can also be overwhelming.
The good news about the ever-changing world of social media is that there is more than one game in town. If Twitter makes you dizzy, Instagram might be your jam. If you’re frustrated by Facebook’s Pages, Facebook Groups could be your happy place.
Plus, new platforms are proving to be incredibly effective at reaching a wider audience just waiting for your perspective.
During my session at the conference, we’re going to look at the latest Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter features that can help you build a community of readers. Plus have you considered Clubhouse? How about Discord? And believe it or not, TikTok isn’t just for dancing.
On the flip side, actively visiting social media streams clues you into what people are interested in or fired up about and that can inspire your next column.
Social media platforms are as unique as the people who post. You don’t have to be everywhere. But you do have to pick one, dedicate time each day to learn it, and then (gulp) start creating content!
Social media can be used for sharing stories with your distinct voice. My presentation is aimed at opening your eyes to new possibilities for finding your readers. Trust me, you don’t have to learn a TikTok dance to explode your readership. (Though that could be fun!) #joinme
