Bob Hill and Bonnie Jean Feldkamp have a few things in common. Both have written columns for The Louisville Courier Journal. Both love gardening and both are big fans of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Bob was the NSNC’s 2010 Ernie Pyle Legacy Award winner and Bonnie Jean was the NSNC’s former Media Director.
Bob has published a new memoir about his column-writing journey so the NSNC is getting these two together virtually for a very special webinar. In conversation and in celebration of Bob’s latest memoir, “Out Here,” they will talk about the craft, the writing adventures and the newspaper industry, then and now.
“Out Here” is a heartfelt and sometimes humorous memoir that takes readers across America’s back roads and main streets to meet unforgettable characters in unexpected places. From a storied journalism career spanning nearly six decades, Bob’s essays weave together encounters with icons like Muhammad Ali and Loretta Lynn with intimate glimpses of everyday heroes. “Out Here” also makes passing reference to a career spent in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, with occasional forays to California, Washington D.C., Czechoslovakia, and Africa. This collection not only celebrates the people and places that define America but also reflects Bob’s unique storytelling voice—honest, compassionate and deeply resonant.
The NSNC’s Ernie Pyle Legacy Award recognizes the ability to connect with people and tell their stories. Bob Hill did just that for 33 years in the 4,000 columns he wrote for the Louisville Times and Courier Journal, and in the 14 books he has authored.
